Unusual Things

You expect to find odd things in any antique store and we have our share.  The picture frame made out of a double outhouse seat is right up there at the top of the list.  In fact, if you give it some thought, a double outhouse seat is unusual enough all by itself.  But the unusual things I thought I would write about in this post are a couple of sticks of gum.

The gum is Wrigley's Doublemint ... and they look really gross! So why are they in the store at all?  Here's the story:

I bought an old gum machine that once sold Doublemint for a penny a stick.  It didn't come with a key so I took it to the local locksmith and when they opened it, they found these two sticks of gum beneath the cup that the pennies dropped into.  The copyright date on the wrappers is 1935, which is about right for the machine.  It makes me think that the machine hadn't been opened since sometime in the 1930s.  I was tempted to throw the gum away, but then figured that since they had been with the machine for 70 years or more, they may as well stay with the machine.

This Weekend - June 14-17

Lots of new (old) things come in all the time so come on in and check them out.  The sidewalk is finished in front of the store and (for now) there is also street parking in front.  So don't let the construction discourage you from coming.  All regularly priced items will be 15% off.  Some dealers are offering even higher discounts.

We have a sidewalk again!! And parking in front!!

Good news!  You no longer have to ignore the "sidewalk closed" signs and walk on the sheets of plywood to get to our front door.  Or find your way to our back door and ring the doorbell to get in (reminiscent of getting into a speakeasy, way back when).  The new sidewalk is completed in front of us AND you can park on the street in front of us.  So for now we are back to normal.  We appreciate all of our fabulous customers who braved the construction.

Celebrating 20 Years!

It's hard for me to believe, but Antiques on Main started in business 20 years ago this month!  Molly Caine and her two daughters-in-law started the business in May of 1992 and it has been going strong ever since.

Please help us celebrate by joining us on Saturday June 2 and Sunday 3 for refreshments, special discounts, and gift certificate drawings.

Yes ... construction will still be an issue, but you can park on the side streets and they have been good about making sure you can get to all the stores on our block.

It's Started

It's finally upon us ..... construction has started along the 200 East block of Main Street.  That means that there will be no parking in front of Antiques on Main for a while and there are orange drums and noise and construction equipment everywhere.

The good news is that we are still open.  The sidewalk is still open and you can easily get to our front door.  You obviously can't park in front of the store but you can park on the side streets and there are two nearby parking ramps.  One is on 2nd Ave. about a half block south of Main Street.  The other is also on 2nd Ave about 1 1/2 blocks north of Main St.  There is also an entrance to this one from Jackson Street, next to Serum's

East Main Street Reconstruction Update

I guess the city is calling it "Main Street Makeover" but it still looks like construction to me.  On the bright side, Antiques on Main is not yet directly affected by it.  The work is still limited to the 100 East block and nothing is happening in front of us.  I've been watching the progress and they have been pretty good about providing access to the stores where the construction is going on so don't let the ongoing work discourage you from visiting us.  If you are uncertain about coming in to shop, call us at 763-323-3990.
